The UK title of this Brookner is A Start in Life-- about a bookish child who grows into an academic who has devoted her life to the study of Balzac. Ok, Anita Brookner's books sound very...small? on paper. But this is never ever true once you start reading her. So long as you avoid Hotel du Lac... I couldn't keep my eyes open on that one. But other than that she is my go to whenever I'm in a reading slump. I love her very ordinary, verging on straight up unlikable, characters living normal, verging--no, they usually live straight up boring lives!!
I've found myself particularly drawn to these 80s Vintage Contemporaries editions lately and really wish I'd read this edition instead of the odd little one that I did read.
